Documentary – Ireland’s Great Hunger and the Irish Diaspora

Join us for this recent documentary on the causes and effects of “An Gorta Mór”, the great Irish Hunger. The film features a mix of historical and personal material and includes coverage of the Canadian reception of famine-driven immigrants through Grosse Ile, Quebec, now an Irish Memorial National Historic Site. As well, the ‘Earl Gray scheme’ is described, whereby 4000 Irish adolescent girls were sent from Irish workhouses to Australia, between 1848 and 1850.
